Superb Diagnostics

To ensure an accurate diagnosis, Dr. Kipp will do a physical exam and ultrasound to pinpoint the exact area and severity of the sprained ankle or foot. This will dictate the best treatment.

Effective Pain Relief

Anti-inflammatories or painkillers will quickly alleviate your pain. We will consider regenerative medicine therapies that can speed tissue healing and enhance recovery after a sprain.

Long Lasting Results

Based on how the sprain occurred, we will recommend steps to decrease the likelihood of future injury. This could involve ankle and calf-strengthening exercises and customized orthotics or insoles.

Ankle Sprains and Strains Can Be A Reocrruing Problem

Ligaments are rope-like tissue that connects two or more bones. If they are stretched or torn, a person might have sprained their ligaments. A strain is a stretch or tear at the point where a muscle attaches to bone. A sprain is different because it’s a bone-to-bone injury.

Causes & Symptoms

What causes sprained ankles?

A sprain is caused by an injury that overstretches, sometimes tearing the ligaments that support it. This can happen when:

  • You either land from a jump incorrectly or stumble on an uneven surface, such as a wet path.
  • A blow to your body causes it to snap back and pull away from the injured area.
  • A sudden sharp motion or torque of your foot.

What are the symptoms of a sprained ankle?

When you injure yourself, it hurts and your body will show signs. It isn’t always easy to know if it’s a small problem or a serious injury. Some common signs and symptoms of injury are:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Instability
  • The inability to move
  • Joint-swelling

Diagnosis & Testing

How is a sprained ankle diagnosed?

Dr. Kipp usually starts with a physical exam and X-ray to check the spacing of the joint and rule out a fracture. He’ll also check for swelling, range of motion, and stability of the joint. If you’re experiencing pain or loss of the ability to move the joint, then it could be a sprain.

Sprains come in different levels of severity:

  • Mild sprains are less severe and have only a little stretching of the ligament.
  • Moderate sprains are more serious because they involve both stretching and a little tearing of the ligament.
  • Severe sprains are the most serious because they entail a complete tear of the ligament.

Treatment

Dr. Kipp will advise you to follow the RICE method for the first 24 to 48 hours after the injury. If the condition is severe and warrants treatment, make an appointment with Dr. Kipp. He can provide conservative treatment to help you recover more quickly and avoid making the situation worse. Depending on the severity of the injury he may use ultrasound imaging to determine if you’re a candidate for regenerative therapy.

Prevention

How can I prevent ankle sprains?

The best way to avoid spraining your ankle is to use common sense. For instance, when you are tired, don’t exercise. Similarly, be careful if you are injured and try to avoid overexerting yourself. Wear shoes that fit correctly and never play sports in old shoes. If you fall, protect yourself with safety measures.

Prognosis

How long does it take to recover from an ankle sprain?

Your injury recovery time will depend on the severity. For milder sprains, your healing may only take a few weeks. In more severe cases, it could take 12 weeks. In the case of a completely torn ligament, surgery is usually required and will have the longest recovery time. In mild cases, you can still do stretching exercises to help with your recovery.

Don't Wait. Get Expert Treatment And Recover Faster

You should always have your foot or ankle sprain examined by a podiatrist. Failing to treat a foot or ankle sprain can result in slower healing, undiagnosed collateral injuries, like a bone fracture, and chronic ankle instability. Prevent needless complications and visit us for treatment as soon as possible.
