Avoid Ingrown Toenails By Taking Care Of Your Feet

Ingrown toenails are a foot problem that develops when the corner of the toenail grows down into the skin. This usually occurs when people cut their toenails at an angle. They’re common, affecting two out of 10 people who visit a doctor for foot problems.

Causes & Symptoms

What causes an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail can have many causes, including:

  • Improperly cut toenails – if you cut your toenails too short or rounded, the nail may grow into the skin.
  • Poorly fitting shoes – if the shoe is too small or has a different shape than your foot, it may cause the nail to grow into the skin.
  • Toe trauma – like banging your toe or getting stepped on.

If you notice that your nail is growing into the skin, or the skin is growing over the nail edge, there’s a high chance that bacteria has entered the nail. The nail may become infected. Signs of ingrown toenails are easy enough to spot. Symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Pus coming out of the toe
  • Redness or darkening of the area
  • Swelling and a feeling of heat on or around the area.

Diagnosis & Testing

How is an ingrown toenail diagnosed?

Dr. Kipp has a simple way of diagnosing an ingrown toenail: he examines the skin around the nail. If the skin is growing over the toenail, is swollen, tender, warm, and red, you’ve got an ingrown toenail. What’s important is the treatment.

Treatment

How do you treat an ingrown toenail?

If you have an ingrown toenail, do not cut it. Cutting the nail may worsen the condition. Have Dr. Kipp do the initial treatment and follow these steps to help control the infection and prevent further pain:

  • Soak your feet in warm water and Epsom salts a couple times a day.
  • Change the pads daily under the nails, and put antibiotic cream on the nails.
  • Make sure to wear roomy shoes or sandals.

If you have an ingrown toenail and meet one of the following criteria, you should get it checked out by Dr. Kipp: Diabetes.

  • Severe nerve damage.
  • Poor blood circulation.
  • An infection.

Prevention

How to prevent ingrown toenails?

To prevent ingrown toenails, take these steps:

  • Soak your nails before cutting them or cut them after a shower.
  • Make sure to clean your nail trimmer before using it.
  • Do not tear or rip your nails. Trim across the top, not round the corners.
  • Wear shoes that fit your toes comfortably.
  • If you have diabetes, be extra careful.

Prognosis

What is the prognosis for someone with an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenails are common and most often do not signal a serious health problem. The ingrown toenail will usually work itself out if you take care of your feet. However, if you have a condition that causes foot problems such as diabetes or nerve damage, you may require regular foot care exams by a podiatrist.

If you want to avoid complications and treat the source of the problem from the start, schedule an appointment with Dr. Kipp today.

Avoid Painful Ingrown Toenail Infections

An ingrown toenail can cause serious issues, including pain and nail loss, for people with diabetes – possible complications like gangrene or ulcers, a need for surgery if action is taken too late. Don’t wait to things to get worse.
